JESUS serving with love
You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:13-15
Bible text :- John 13 vs 1-17
To understand this concept, first, you must understand what selflessness and humility is :
To start with , Selflessness: is without concern for one’s self, unselfish; ability to put another’s well-being ahead of one’s own concerns;
To be selfless you to be
self-sacrificing
You don’t have to be selfish
“ arrogant
“ self righteous
You have to look out for peoples interest because this was the attitude that was in Christ Jesus .
Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility],”
(Philippians 2:3-5)
Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. (Luke 9:23).
I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. (Ephesians 3:13) Paul’s was concern for the Ephesians in this verse. He was in prison yet he was worried about the Ephesians’ happiness and glory.
Humility
Is the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people or the quality or state of being humble. (James 4:6 But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble).
Pls take note ,
humility is not simplicity. Humility does not mean to devalue or degrade yourself in order not to sound so important. You cannot degrade yourself and call it humility.
A lot of people say, "I don't know much. I'm an illiterate. I am not that smart. You know more than I do." Thinking that they are trying to be humble in which most of the time that is not , they don’t know that they are trying to be simple which can also mean stupidity
GOD & SIMPLICITY
Does GOD value simplicity?
Even God hates simplicity so much. Every time He went up to someone to use them, they expressed simplicity, and He was usually annoyed with them. When He went to Moses, Moses started saying, "Lord you know I have a difficulty speaking. Please use another person." The Bible records, that THE ANGER OF THE LORD BURNED AGAINST MOSES (Exodus Chapter 4:14). The same thing happened with Gideon, and God just ignored him and kept talking.
What is Humility? Humility is summarized as service to humanity. Humility is when you realize that your entire function as human is embedded in service to humanity. When a servant ceases to be humble and starts to see his good works as coming from himself instead of God, he forfeits God’s grace as I have stated above in the book of James 4:6
But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.
Pride and a Humble Servant
Pride is therefore thinking that you are superior to anyone in any way, such that you cannot serve. And the reason this is wrong is that, God created every human being equally, even though we manifest different dimensions of Him. But just because the dimension of God operating in you has more recognition than that of another, doesn't make you superior to them. And because of That's you begin to look down on people, through words and actions.
But Jesus was keen on correcting that notion, that He decided to teach them about humility and service by washing their feet, as recorded in John 13:1-17.
In that passage, Jesus was using the act of washing the feet, to elaborate on the fact that service to humanity is about identifying with them as people of the same class, so as to be able to bring them along to the kingdom of God.
Purpose of Serving
We should kill the attitude of judgementality, thinking that we're above someone because we are on God's side and they're still smoking, drinking, chasing women, committing immoralities and so on.
We should never see them as that, but to humbly relate with people as potential ambassadors of the kingdom.
The goal is to bring people to the kingdom, but we can use several means to achieve this, like showing love, being kind, being caring, helping people, praying for people, wishing them well, encouraging them.
This establishes a good foundation to want to identify with the kingdom that made you such a delightful person.
That was what Jesus was trying to show them in that passage.
To keep our minds on the fact that this is a primary responsibility as humans, will motivate us to maintain faithfulness while serving others. When you realize that it is part of what you were created for, it will push you to be kinder to people, to be more caring and loving, to be more human towards them, to be good to them, and to express genuine feelings of love and attention towards them. When this becomes an everyday practice, it will help you remain focused on the assignment faithfully and humbly.
This also applies within the church environment too, where you treat everyone with love, respect, care and concern, kindness, speak good and encouraging words, aim to enlighten and not demean, aim to build and not destroy, focus on correcting in love and not out of spite.
That is how to serve selflessly, faithfully, and in humility.
Ask yourselves this questions:-
1 Where in your life do you struggle the most with being selfless?
2 What is the connection between humility
and serving others?
